Is that Right?

Thirty years ago, I was on a college baseball team.  I say 'on', vs. 'played', because I did a lot of watching.  While looking up some information about the current team, I found my name, associated with that old season, on the internet.

This isn't an anti-sports rant, but it's interesting how we have the stats at our fingertips, for how many rebounds a kid in Alaska made during last nights game, or even how many hits our little leaguer had in the 2012 season.  In our information age, data is available, but how much of it is just an extension of what was available in the box scores in the paper a few years ago?

About 20 years ago one of my family members had a minor medical issue, that became more serious, quickly.  Out of an abundance of caution, I called 911.  I remember walking back to the back of the house, to check on the family member, I recall thinking 'they'll be here in a few minutes'.  As I walked back towards the front of the house, a neighbor, Joe DeBoy, was coming in the house.  I had forgotten he was a volunteer fireman.  He was in our house in what must have been only a minute or two after I made the call.  The incident came and went, not a serious medical issue, but an event that left an indelible mark that says, when you need help, there are people among us who step up.

Most of my professional time since that unremarkable baseball season has been in IT, mostly developing desktop applications, but more recently in creating or managing websites.  What began as a nagging thought that people doing good work don't get enough credit, evolved into the site you're visiting today.  The specifics over the last few years have changed, but the general premise remains the same, provide a simple outlet to display what good deeds were done the day before.

Just as the site has changed in the last few years, I'm sure it will continue to evolve going forward.  The important part, is we at least have a platform to begin to acknowledge those good deeds, and the people that perform them.
